Colonial Van Lines: Full HGM research

Research reviewed October 7, 2026. Records and terms can change.

Federal records, operating arrangements, consumer evidence and source limitations behind HGM’s overview. Use the short company profile for the key booking considerations.

Research context and what to verify

Use the dated federal record to identify the company and your shipment documents to identify who performs the work. Public review accounts explain reported experiences, not how often an outcome occurs.

Federal identity verification

FMCSA SAFER accessed October 7, 2026, with data dated October 6, identifies Colonial Van Lines Inc., USDOT 1434373 / MC-681534, as ACTIVE, with motor-carrier authority for household goods and other property. The record identifies a carrier, not a broker. Reviewer terminology does not change that classification.

Review evidence and dated accounts

Approximately 15–20 usable narratives were visible across the retained pages; this is a conservative working estimate, not an audited unique-household total. Evidence anchors span April–October 2026, with particularly useful June–September experiences.

Identifiable anchors:

  • Trustpilot, Anna Prunty — September 29, 2026 experience — Professional crews at both ends
  • Trustpilot, customer, “Very few problems overall” — October 2, 2026 experience — Helpful movers; scheduling communication lapse
  • Trustpilot page 2, Phil Raney — August 22, 2026 experience — Good crews; late delivery and weak updates
  • Trustpilot page 2, Monica — August 24, 2026 experience — Careful handling and responsive coordination
  • Trustpilot page 2, customer, “Generally good experience” — August 21, 2026 experience — Zip Van Lines attribution; good crew, office callbacks lacking
  • Trustpilot page 2, nolalynn — June 23, 2026 experience — Damage and contested settlement
  • ConsumerAffairs, Wes — July 21, 2026 review — Packing and communication praise; explicitly company-featured
  • BBB complaint — September 16, 2026 filing — Agent attribution, disputed billing/damage; response and rejected offer
  • BBB complaint — September 11, 2026 filing — Delivery/update issue; accepted response
  • BBB complaint — August 28, 2026 filing — Storage-statement dispute; customer reports satisfactory resolution

Exclude the company-featured ConsumerAffairs placement from any claim about independent selection or prevalence. An October account still within its stated delivery window is not proof that the contractual window was missed. Family members describing one move do not supply multiple independent experiences.

Resolution updates matter: the September 11 BBB complainant accepted a response offering delay compensation. The September 16 complainant rejected a later refund offer; it remains a disputed account, not a resolved claim. Do not turn these individualized offers into companywide compensation policy.

Attribution and resolution context

Carrier authority does not identify the crew on an individual shipment. Colonial’s BBB explanation of agent use is company-attributed; customer descriptions of another company remain accounts, not authenticated contracts. Colonial Van Lines Relocation Division LLC is a separate entity and is excluded without a contract establishing that entity. Separately arranged auto transport is not evidence about the household-goods crew. Binding-estimate descriptions were not independently checked against customer contracts, scale tickets, inventories or damage photographs.

The company-featured ConsumerAffairs account is identified as selected placement, not independent selection or prevalence evidence. An account still within its delivery window does not establish a missed contractual deadline. Family members describing one move are not multiple independent experiences. Accepted compensation, rejected offers and a satisfactory storage-related resolution are distinguished in the dated record. Individual offers do not establish a companywide compensation policy.

Review methodology and limitations

HGM’s October 7, 2026 review uses a purposive qualitative sample of identifiable public narratives and business replies. It is not a random sample, complete export or verified customer survey. Sample estimates describe usable narratives, not audited unique households or all customers. Short ratings-only posts, platform summaries, company testimonials and commercial recommendations were not counted as independent theme evidence. Allegations are not findings of fact.

A complaint and its replies count as one account; featured duplicates, updates and identifiable repeat posts are not additional accounts. Similar household narratives were treated as possible overlap. Redactions and missing job identifiers prevent complete cross-platform deduplication. Displayed review, experience and filing dates can differ; updates to older moves are not new experiences. Source pages and ordering can change. No pooled score, rate or frequency percentage is inferred.

Operating context retained from the prior profile

The following operational context and terms were retained from the October 5 profile; they were not newly reverified unless stated above.

Interstate household-goods carrier that may use service providers or agents · Pompano Beach, Florida · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

Colonial Van Lines Inc. is federally registered as an interstate household-goods carrier under USDOT 1434373 / MC 681534.

Colonial also says it may use service providers or agents in some circumstances. That makes the shipment paperwork important: the estimate, Order for Service, Bill of Lading, and any carrier or service-provider disclosures should show which company is responsible for each part of the move.

HGM does not rate or recommend movers. This profile explains Colonial’s identity, operating model, public review evidence, company-specific terms, and what to check before booking.

How Colonial Van Lines works

Colonial is federally registered as an interstate household-goods carrier.

That does not establish that a Colonial-branded truck or Colonial-employed crew will perform every stage of every shipment.

Colonial’s consumer materials tell customers to ask whether workers are employees or subcontractors and to confirm which company will be responsible for handling the shipment.

In a BBB complaint response reviewed by HGM, Colonial stated that it is an authorized household-goods carrier, not a broker, and that it may use service providers within its network when a Colonial truck or driver is unavailable. HGM treats that as Colonial’s statement about its operating practices, not independent proof of how any particular shipment will be assigned.

For a specific move, use the shipment documents to identify:

  • the legal company name;
  • USDOT and MC numbers;
  • the motor carrier identified on the estimate;
  • the motor carrier identified on the Order for Service;
  • the motor carrier identified on the Bill of Lading;
  • and any disclosed agent or service provider.

Similar Colonial names

FMCSA search results contain other registrations using Colonial Van Lines Inc. or closely similar names.

For this profile, Colonial Van Lines means:

COLONIAL VAN LINES INC
USDOT 1434373
MC 681534
Pompano Beach, Florida

Those identifiers match Colonial’s consumer-facing website and the federal record reviewed by HGM.

Other similarly named records are separate. HGM does not combine them with this profile or assume they are branches, affiliates, successors, sister companies, or commonly controlled businesses without evidence establishing that relationship.

What the operating model may help explain

If a review says another company, crew, or service provider appeared during the move, that does not by itself establish that Colonial acted as a broker or engaged in misconduct.

Colonial has stated that service providers may participate in some shipments.

The useful consumer question is:

Which company is identified on my shipment documents, and what role is the other provider performing?

The same logic applies to review attribution. A handling or delivery experience may involve a provider participating in the shipment rather than only Colonial personnel.

What to check before you book

1. Confirm the exact Colonial entity

Match your paperwork to:
Colonial Van Lines Inc.
USDOT 1434373
MC 681534

If your documents show different federal numbers, research that company separately.

2. Ask who performs each part of the move

Ask whether Colonial itself or another disclosed provider will handle:

  • pickup;
  • interstate transportation;
  • storage;
  • delivery.

If another company may participate, ask for its legal name, USDOT/MC numbers, and role before signing.

3. Confirm how your estimate works

Colonial’s published FAQ distinguishes binding and non-binding estimates and describes long-distance pricing as weight-based.

Before signing, confirm:

  • whether the estimate is binding or non-binding;
  • the inventory or shipment weight it is based on;
  • included services;
  • and what circumstances can change the amount.

4. Get possible additional charges in writing

Colonial’s published information identifies factors including:

  • inventory or weight changes;
  • long carries;
  • stairs;
  • packing;
  • storage;
  • other moving add-ons.

Ask which ones can apply to your move and whether they are already included.

5. Confirm pickup and delivery terms

Identify the pickup and delivery dates, windows, or spreads stated in your contract.

Do not assume a date is guaranteed unless the contract expressly provides guaranteed service.

6. Understand valuation and claims before the move

Colonial’s consumer materials discuss Released Value and Full Value Protection.

Federal carrier insurance filings are different from the valuation protection selected for your belongings.

For interstate moves, federal consumer materials generally provide a nine-month period for filing a written loss or damage claim. Confirm the applicable deadline and requirements in your own documents.

Company terms that matter

Binding vs. non-binding estimates

Colonial’s FAQ distinguishes between binding and non-binding estimates.

A binding estimate should be read together with the inventory and included services. A non-binding estimate can depend on actual shipment weight and performed services.

Pricing factors

Colonial’s published materials identify factors that can affect cost, including inventory, weight or density, long carries, stairs, packing, storage, and other add-ons.

The written estimate should show what is included for your specific move.

Pickup and delivery

The contract should identify the applicable pickup and delivery dates or windows.

Ask whether any date is guaranteed and how changes or delays are communicated.

Valuation and claims

Released Value and Full Value Protection are not the same thing as the carrier’s federal insurance filings.

Review:

  • your valuation election;
  • deductible or exclusions;
  • damage documentation requirements;
  • claim procedure;
  • applicable deadline.
