American Van Lines: Full HGM research

Research reviewed October 7, 2026. Records and terms can change.

Federal records, operating arrangements, consumer evidence and source limitations behind HGM’s overview. Use the short company profile for the key booking considerations.

Research context and what to verify

Use the dated federal record to identify the company and your shipment documents to identify who performs the work. Public review accounts explain reported experiences, not how often an outcome occurs.

Federal identity verification

FMCSA SAFER accessed October 7, 2026, with data dated October 5, identifies American Van Lines Inc., USDOT 614506 / MC-294798, as ACTIVE with motor-carrier authority for household goods and other property. This registration does not establish that AVL employees and vehicles perform every shipment leg.

Review evidence and dated accounts

Approximately 15–20 usable narratives, with a conservative allowance for similar household accounts. Main evidence spans June–October 2026; some complaints refer to moves booked earlier in 2026.

  • Trustpilot, Scott Weaver — October 5, 2026 experience — Crew effort

Do not count company-site/Trustindex syndicated BBB or Google material again. The Greensboro BBB review expressly identifies at least one Google cross-post; it was not added to the retained national sample. Separate entity matching remains necessary. The Sofia/adjacent capacity narratives are possible overlap, not established separate corroboration. Paid-pickup-window descriptions are not independently verified contract terms.

The two September BBB complaints above were marked resolved; an August 31 complaint was answered, not confirmed resolved. Preserve that difference. An account describing an unfinished delivery is an account in progress, not proof of ultimate loss.

Attribution and resolution context

City Movers, Cobra, Shields and Weststar references are customer-reported involvement, not verified contractual relationships or findings about those companies. Contracts, employee relationships and disputed invoices were not independently authenticated. Revised inventory or packing estimates do not by themselves establish a violation of a binding estimate. Paid-pickup-window descriptions remain unverified contract terms.

Company-site and Trustindex syndications are not additional independent reviews. The Greensboro BBB corpus was excluded pending entity/job matching, including an identified Google cross-post. Similar Sofia/adjacent capacity narratives are one possible-overlap cluster. Similarly named California entities, older broker litigation and unrelated brands are excluded. The September 16 motorcycle-transport complaint and September 4 desk-damage complaint were marked resolved; the August 31 complaint was answered without confirmed resolution. An unfinished shipment is not proof of ultimate loss.

Review methodology and limitations

HGM’s October 7, 2026 review uses a purposive qualitative sample of identifiable public narratives and business replies. It is not a random sample, complete export or verified customer survey. Sample estimates describe usable narratives, not audited unique households or all customers. Short ratings-only posts, platform summaries, company testimonials and commercial recommendations were not counted as independent theme evidence. Allegations are not findings of fact.

A complaint and its replies count as one account; featured duplicates, updates and identifiable repeat posts are not additional accounts. Similar household narratives were treated as possible overlap. Redactions and missing job identifiers prevent complete cross-platform deduplication. Displayed review, experience and filing dates can differ; updates to older moves are not new experiences. Source pages and ordering can change. No pooled score, rate or frequency percentage is inferred.

Operating context retained from the prior profile

The following operational context and terms were retained from the October 5 profile; they were not newly reverified unless stated above.

Interstate household-goods carrier that may use agents or independent subcontractors · Pompano Beach, Florida · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

How American Van Lines works

American Van Lines is federally registered as a household-goods motor carrier.

Its current terms also state that it may use agents or independent subcontractors and describe shipment consolidation, temporary storage, transfers between vehicles, and rental-vehicle use in some circumstances.

Consumers therefore should not assume:

  • every mover or driver is directly employed by American Van Lines;
  • one crew will handle the shipment from beginning to end;
  • every vehicle will display the same branding;
  • another company or crew automatically means the shipment was brokered.

The estimate, Order for Service, Bill of Lading, inventories, valuation paperwork, and revised documents are more useful than branding alone for understanding an individual shipment.

Earlier review context

The following findings are retained from the October 5 profile. The dated October 7 evidence above supplies the updated overview.

HGM reviewed consumer feedback about American Van Lines alongside current company and federal information. The reports below are presented as consumer experiences and should be read in the context of American Van Lines’ use of agents and independent subcontractors.

Positive experiences reported

Reviewed feedback included reports involving:

  • careful and courteous crews;
  • helpful coordinators and estimators;
  • professional service;
  • successful handling or move execution;
  • specialty-item handling.

Because American may use agents or subcontractors, HGM avoids automatically describing every crew working on an AVL shipment as direct AVL employees.

Concerns reported

Other reviews described:

  • late or rescheduled pickup and delivery;
  • final charges above earlier estimates;
  • pricing or contract disputes;
  • difficulty obtaining updates;
  • damaged or missing items;
  • claim disputes or delays;
  • another company or crew appearing when the customer expected American Van Lines.

Those are review-derived themes, not HGM findings of misconduct.

What the operating model may help explain

Some reviews describe another company, crew, vehicle, warehouse, or transfer arrangement appearing during an American Van Lines move.

American’s terms expressly allow agents and independent subcontractors and describe transfers, consolidation, temporary storage, and rental vehicles.

That means another company’s presence is not by itself proof of deception or unlawful brokering.

The useful consumer question is:

Who is the motor carrier identified on my documents, and what role is the other company or crew performing?

The same operating model matters when interpreting positive crew reviews. A favorable crew experience may involve people working on the AVL shipment without establishing their exact employment relationship.

What to check before you book

1. Match the company identity

Confirm:
American Van Lines Inc.
USDOT 614506
MC-294798

Check the estimate, Order for Service, and Bill of Lading.

2. Ask whether agents or subcontractors will participate

American’s terms allow both.

Ask whether another company may handle:

  • pickup;
  • packing;
  • transportation;
  • storage;
  • delivery.

If known, get its legal name and role.

3. Know your cancellation deadline

American’s posted terms describe a written cancellation/refund period tied to the three days immediately following Bill of Lading signature.

Do not simplify that to “three days after booking.”

Outside the stated window, or once physical services begin, the terms become more restrictive.

4. Decide whether you need guaranteed service

American’s terms distinguish guaranteed service from ordinary pickup and delivery spreads.

If a particular date matters, confirm in writing whether guaranteed service was purchased.

5. Get revised pricing in writing when the shipment changes

For binding estimates, American’s terms allow a new written binding estimate when inventory or requested services change before work begins.

Keep:

  • original inventory;
  • estimate;
  • revised inventory;
  • new estimate or addendum;
  • final Bill of Lading.

Company terms that matter

Binding and non-binding estimates

American’s current terms distinguish binding and non-binding estimates.

For a binding estimate, added inventory or services can result in a new written binding estimate before work begins.

For a non-binding estimate, final charges may depend on actual weight and services under the applicable tariff.

The terms also reference the federal 110% delivery-payment rule for qualifying non-binding estimates. That rule should not be treated as a universal cap on every final charge.

Additional charges

American’s terms identify possible charges involving:

  • packing materials or labor;
  • stairs;
  • elevators;
  • extra stops;
  • long carries;
  • shuttles;
  • redelivery;
  • restrictive access;
  • added inventory or services.

Confirm which conditions apply to your move and keep revised documents.

Cancellation and refunds

American’s posted terms describe the cancellation/refund window based on Bill of Lading signature.

Consumers should verify their shipment-specific deadline and obtain written confirmation of any cancellation or refund.

Pickup and delivery timing

American’s terms distinguish guaranteed service from ordinary pickup and delivery windows.

Unless guaranteed service was purchased, do not assume an informal date is an unconditional contractual deadline.

Valuation and claims

American’s terms describe:

  • basic released-value liability at $0.60 per pound per article;
  • optional Full Value Protection;
  • high-value-item declarations;
  • written claims and supporting documentation.

American’s published terms include a nine-month claim-filing period for covered interstate loss/damage claims.

HGM reports these as company contract positions and does not turn them into universal legal conclusions about every dispute.

BBB source note

During HGM’s October refresh, BBB’s profile carried a disclosure alleging that American Van Lines requested withdrawal of complaint or review text as a condition of resolving issues.

HGM attributes that statement specifically to BBB.

BBB is a private review/complaint platform, not a regulator, and HGM does not present the disclosure as an FMCSA, DOT, or government finding.

Common questions

Is American Van Lines a carrier or broker?

The federal record reviewed by HGM identifies American Van Lines Inc. as a household-goods motor carrier and did not show household-goods broker authority.

American’s terms also permit agents and independent subcontractors. Their participation does not automatically mean American acted as a broker.

Can another company or crew appear during an AVL move?

Yes, depending on the shipment arrangement.

American’s terms allow agents and independent subcontractors and describe transfers, consolidation, storage, and rental vehicles.

Check the move documents to identify the motor carrier and the role of any other participant.

When can I cancel?

American’s posted terms tie the stated cancellation/refund period to the three days immediately following Bill of Lading signature.

Read the current terms and your shipment documents for the exact deadline.

Can the final price change?

It can, depending on estimate type, inventory changes, added services, access conditions, and other documented changes.

For a binding estimate, added inventory or services can lead to a new written binding estimate before work begins.

Is Released Value insurance?

No.

Released Value is a limited carrier-liability option, commonly $0.60 per pound per article. It is not the same thing as full replacement-value insurance.

Earlier review attribution and limitations

Evidence reviewed September 29, 2026. Review material was assessed for American Van Lines, USDOT 614506. Source details identify attribution and review-integrity limitations. Reviewer accounts do not establish company-wide performance.

Reviewed accounts describe delays, final charges above estimates, difficulty getting updates, and damage or claims disputes. Some customers report that another company performed the move without the notice they expected.

Other accounts praise crews and coordinators. Generic or templated wording in some recent favorable reviews limits the conclusions HGM can draw from that material; it does not establish that an individual review is false.

American Van Lines is the carrier of record but may use agents or independent subcontractors. Confirm which company will perform your move, how any change will be communicated, and who handles pricing questions and claims.

These are reviewers’ accounts, not verified findings or a measure of how often an issue occurs.

This summary concerns American Van Lines Inc., USDOT 614506. Brand-level accounts do not always identify the company that performed the shipment. Generic or templated wording limits interpretation; it does not establish that an individual review is false. The reported concern about another company performing a move is lack of expected notice, not the use of agents or subcontractors itself.
